Cognitive impairments can arise following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion, sometimes referred to as minor traumatic brain injury or mTBI. These limitations can include impaired memory, concentration, organization, and executive function (problem-solving). A general rule with brain injuries is what function an individual gets back in the first two years following the event, is the function the individual will get back. Following this timeline, improved quality of life and independence come from managing the symptoms that remain.
A cognitive functional capacity evaluation is a specific battery of tests utilized to measure the degree of impairment of an individual’s memory, concentration, organization, and executive function. When a cognitive capacity evaluation is used years following the event, it can help establish the degree of disability an individual may have to manage for the rest of their life. When a cognitive capacity evaluation is used within the first two years following the event, it can help identify the degree of disability an individual has before referral to a brain injury program and be used as a measure of improvement when compared to later testing.
