Do You Have Injuries from A Motor Vehicle Accident?
The most common injuries from motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) include whiplash (affecting the neck and back), fractures, chronic myofascial pain, loss of range of motion, concussion, cervicogenic headaches, and increased incidence of anxiety and depression.
Many of these injuries stem from rear-end and T-bone-type collisions.
These injuries and symptoms can affect an individual’s abilities to carry out their activities of daily living, perform their work demands, and enjoy their favorite recreational pursuits.
To fully recover from these types of injuries and return to work and their pre-accident quality of life, active rehabilitation plays an important role following or in conjunction with your passive therapies (physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, etc.). Active rehabilitation is exercise-based therapy supervised by a kinesiologist. Sessions are performed one-one-on-one, much like a personal training session but injury-focused. For each 60-minute session, a practicing kinesiologist, registered with the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists, guides you through an exercise regime designed to enhance your core strength, functional strength, endurance, mobility, and range of motion. Moreover, your kinesiologist will coach you in functional mechanics and proper exercise techniques. Sessions can be community, gym, or pool-based depending upon the goals of the program and your specific needs.
Benefits of active rehabilitation include:
- Enhanced mobility & range of motion
- Enhanced strength & stability
- Improved function & activity tolerance
- Pain management
- Improved mood
- Earlier returns to work & an active life
Your active rehabilitation begins with an initial assessment, which will serve as a basis for your active rehabilitation program design. From there, your progress will be assessed as you advance through the program.

“Kinesiologists are human movement specialists offering a wide variety of assessments and services to the public to assist with both injury/illness prevention and injury management. Their practice is based on the core sciences of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and psychomotor behavior. Kinesiologists provide services through the application of the science of human movement and deliver quality solutions through prevention, objective assessment, and evidence-based intervention.” (Canadian Kinesiology Alliance).
